Oodles and oodles of Doodles
If you have been looking for a goldendoodle you have probably seen that there are all sorts of doodles being bred today. There are goldendoodles, labradoodles, bernedoodles, schnoodles, whoodles, aussiedoodles, and the list goes on and on. So then you are left to question what is an ENGLISHDOODLE?
An Englishdoodle is a type of goldendoodle that is a mixed or hybrid breed dog that is part Poodle and part English Golden Retriever. An English Golden Retriever is a golden retriever that has been bred towards breed standards that were not set by the American Kennel Club (AKC) but instead The Kennel Club (based in Europe). The illustration below shows the differences between "American" and "English" golden retrievers. Again, they are the same breed of dog- but being bred towards different color and structure goals. That said, Jasper, our English Golden Retriever is registered by the AKC because they recognize that although he was bred to different standards, he is still, in fact, a purebred golden retriever.

Doodle Generations Explained

A first-generation goldendoodle, commonly referred to as F1, is when a purebred standard poodle is bred with a purebred golden retriever. This means an F1 doodle is approximately 50% poodle, 50% retriever. F1 coats can appear straight, wavy or curly. F1 doodles will shed considerably less than purebred retrievers and are considered to be light to moderate shedders.

An F1b goldendoodle is when you take an F1 doodle and breed it back to a purebred dog. Most of the time it will be a purebred poodle. This is done in an effort to further reduce shedding by increasing the amount of poodle in the pups. While genetics aren't completely predictable, most F1b doodles are considered to be 75% poodle and 25% retriever. F1b coats can be wavy to curly to tight curled. They maintain that adorable doodle look but are likely to be no to low shedding.

An F1bb goldendoodle is when you have an F1b doodle and you breed it back to a purebred dog. Most often, again, this will be a purebred poodle. This will even further reduce shedding and dander for allergy suffers. These puppies can have wavy to curly to tight curl coats. F1bb doodles can be more than 90% poodle. Most will still retain the famous doodle look but some can be mistaken for a standard poodle.

Sugardoodles by Smith will eventually be breeding F1bb(r) doodles. Technically, they could be called an F1bb doodle but we are choosing to call it F1bb(r) so that it is clear we are breeding our F1b back to a purebred english retriever. We will be checking genetics on our F1b puppies to ensure any selected to be in our F1bb(r) line have two copies of what is called the furnishing gene. The furnishing gene is responsible for the eyebrows and beards that make doodles so cute as well as contribute to reduced shedding. Our goal is to maintain the low shedding hopefully lower maintenance coat featuring the adorable teddy bear face with a full beard and bushy brows while adding back in more of the laid back english retriever personality. This is a work in progress. Stay tuned!
